ForCardio Lab

Laboratory of Experimental Micro and Biofluid dynamics

mimiclab

ForcardioLab mission is to support preclinical research in cardiovascular therapies by merging technical and medical knowledge. ForcardioLab has been developing tools which enable realistic and reliable experimental assessment of valvular implants and surgical reparative techniques. Among the custom-made experimental platforms are: a passive beating heart platform housing left portion of the porcine heart, a passive beating heart platform housing right portion of the porcine heart, a pulse duplicator housing aortic root functional unit and a simulator for the coronary flow. The integration of engineering and medical knowledge helped in exploring new possibilities for more complex and thus more realistic platforms. Recently, we performed first trials of restoring the natural contractions of excited porcine heart in so called isolated beating heart apparatus. In the very last years the laboratory focus evolved also in new directions. The experience gained up to now helped in deep understanding of the mechanisms of valvular pathologies and in getting acquainted with the current treatment approaches. In this perspective we are currently extensively using our know-how and apparatuses for studying and developing innovative transcatheter therapies. This experience led to development of our own concept of novel treatments technique. The know-how of the laboratory also attracted valvular therapies developers (both surgical and transcatheter-based). The laboratory has collaborations with R&D departments of world leaders in the field as well as with medical start-ups from all-over Europe. In addition to research oriented activities, Forcardiolab provides training oriented tools to clinicians and companies with the aim of improving skills of the operators performing transcatheter treatments in a hybrid platform, consisting of polymeric models and porcine samples. The same tools have been used with demonstrational purposes at several medical congresses.

Research interests

  • Experimental study of the biomechanics of heart valves in ex-vivo models simulating physiological and pathological conditions

  • Study of transcatheter approaches for the treatment of heart disease from the study of the biomechanical interaction of the device with heart structure, to the development of novel approaches

  • Experimental study of surgical approaches to heart valves repair focused on aortic and mitral valve repair techniques and surgical replacement of the valve

  • Development of mock loop for the simulation of the cardiovascular system for research and for physician’s training
