CB Lab

Laboratorary of Computational Biomechanics

CB Lab develops cutting edge computational models for the analysis of tissue, organs, and devices, with an emphasis on cardiovascular applications.

Finite element modeling allows for the detailed quantification of the structural mechanics of tissues and organs, as well as for the impact of implantable devices and procedures on the stresses acting on the relevant native structures. Finite volume modeling allows for quantifying the fluid dynamics within blood vessels, cardiac chambers and blood-processing devices. When fed with information derived from medical images, these techniques allow for patient-specific simulations that can allow for the deeper and underwise unfeasible understanding of pathological conditions, so to improve diagnosis and prognosis, as well as to predict the effect of surgical and interventional solutions.

Moreover, CB Lab is involved in the activities of other Labs of the Group (Mimic Lab, Th Lab, μBs Lab) by supporting the design of microfluidic devices and artificial organs, as well as by providing numerical analyses that complement in vitro experiments. 

 

 

Research interests

Through the years, we have been developing a broad spectrum of activities in the field of cardiovascular mechanics, which all share a strong translational interest:

Image-based Patient-specific Modeling

  • Analysis of biomechanical derangements associated to pathological conditions in large vessels, heart valves and heart chambers through anatomically detailed models
  • Prediction of the biomechanical effect of surgical or interventional procedures on a patient-specific basis
  • Quantification of in vivo tissue strains directly from medical images
  • Quantification of in vivo blood fluid dynamics based on 4Dflow images

Multi-scale Modeling of Organs

  • Derivation of mechanical stimuli on valvilar interstitial cells starting from finite element simulations at the organ length-scale

Analysis of Blood-Processing devices

  • Quantification of the performance of left ventricular assist devices (LVADs), blood pumps and oxygenators, as well as of the associated risk of blood damage
  • Assessment of the risk of shear-mediates platelet activation

Holography for Augmented Reality

  • 4D visualization of volumetric datasets from medical imaging
  • Developing tools to support surgical and interventional planning

The Computational Biomechanics Laboratory is part of the CFDHub@POLIMI lab cluster of Politecnico di Milano and is equipped with state-of-the-heart linux nodes for supercomputing activities.

Hardware:

      • 1 cluster of 2 Server SUN Fire X4450 (4 Intel Xeon X7350 @2.93 GHz each) and 2 Server Intel PowerEdge R410 (2 Intel Xeon X5670 @2.93Ghz each)
      • 7 duo-quad workstations (i7 CPUs, 8 GB ram) equipped with general-purpose “Kepler” GPU
      • 3 duo-quad workstations (Xeon5150 CPUs, 4 GB RAM)
      • 1 duo-quad workstation (i7 CPUs, 8 GB RAM) equipped with Nvidia Quadro 2000 GPU for visualization and 3D modeling
