Our Labs

Overview

The Biomechanics Research Group runs laboratories at three different premises: at Politecnico di Milano, within the Department of Electronics, Information and Bioengineering (DEIB), where the core engineering activities are carried out, and two different Hospitals, namely Luigi Sacco Hospital in Milan and IRCCS Policlinico San Donato in San Donato Milanese (in the surroundigs of Milan), where highly clinically-driven activities are carried out in tight collaboration with cliniciancs.

Laboratories @ DEIB, Politecnico di Milano

C3D Lab

At DEIB, we run five research laboratories covering experimental and computational activities at different lengh-scales and an auxiliary prototyping lab.

On the experimental side, the Mimic Lab is devoted to developing and exploiting microfluidic organ-on-chips; the Th-Lab is focused on the analysis of the thrombogenic potential of blood-processing devices; the μBS Lab is devoted to in vitro biofluid dynamics and to the design of test benches for a broad spectrum of applications ranging from cell cultures and bioreactors to the testing of implantable devices.

On the computational side the CB Lab and the BiomolEng Lab share our computing facilities and are devoted to numerical modeling at the continuum and molecular/atomistic lengthscale, respectively.

Laboratory @ Luigi Sacco Hospital Milano

C3D Lab

At Luigi Sacco Hospital, we run the ForCardio Lab together with the cardiac surgeons working at the Cardiac Surgery Division of the hospital. The activities of the laboratory are mostly related to in vitro testing of techniques and implantable devices for cardiac surgery and interventional cardiology.

Consistently with the most recent advancesin the field, transcatheter and minimally invasive approaches are now a main focus of the lab's activity, which includes the setting of customized mock loops for industrial R&D.

Laboratory @ IRCCS Policlinico San Donato

C3D Lab

At IRCCS Policlinico San Donato, we collaborate with engineers and clinicians from the hospital to run the 3D and Computer Simulation Laboratory (C3D Lab), which was founded in 2017 by IRCCS Policlinico San Donato with the aim to boost applied research. The C3D Lab currently works mainly on numerical modeling and image processing, but also exploits 3D printing to support procedural planning. Also, the Lab is in the process of acquiring experimental facilities for in vitro activities.
