μBS Lab

Laboratory of Experimental Micro and Biofluid dynamics

mimiclab

The mission of the laboratory is to carry out research and teaching in the fields of in-vitro biofluid-dynamics and development of devices interacting with biological fluids and tissues. In line with these activities, µBS Lab provides the Biomech group with multipurpose fluid-dynamic bench testing capabilities, representing the main support environment for the assessment of our thematic laboratories’ technological developments.
Research at µBS Lab is carried out in close contact with laboratories of excellence at other PoliMI Departments and with National and International research centers. Continuous collaborations with Italian and International biomedical industries also take place, particularly in the fields of blood processing apparatuses and devices for cardiovascular surgical/interventional corrections.
µBS Lab supports the activities of the FoRCardioLab, the laboratory of the Foundation for Research in Cardiac Surgery, located at L. Sacco hospital in Milan, a joint initiative of PoliMI researchers in biomedical engineering and biomedical staff at the University of Milan.
Lab activities of the Biofluidodynamics Laboratory teaching course takes place entirely at µBS Lab, as well as other lab activities pertaining to some other teaching courses of the Master's Degree Program in Biomedical Engineering.

Research interests

The aim of the research at µBS Lab is improving knowledge in the fields of cardiovascular bioengineering, biological fluids treatment, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. The aims of basic research are then combined with those of applied research, mainly in terms of development and optimization of biomedical devices for lab research and/or for industrial applications.
Specifically, research is devoted the following methodological and technological aspects:

a. Experimental studies of cardiovascular fluid dynamics in physiological, pathological and/or prosthesized conditions

b. Functional analysis and optimization of devices for the treatment of blood (filters, mass and heat exchangers, dialysers, etc.)

c. Design, realization and testing of tissue culture systems for advanced cardiovascular mechanobiology studies and for the regenerative medicine field

d. Complementary topics of biomedical fluid dynamics, such as the study of cerebrospinal fluid treatments and advanced techniques for eye surgery
